Films I saw in 2009

I watched a total of 162 films in 2009. I only saw five that actually came out in 2009. Of those (Watchmen, Broken Embraces, Life During Wartime, District 9, Star Trek) none of them were in the top sixty films I saw during the year.

I'm working through the 2003 edition of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and I managed to knock off 86 more films in 2009, putting me at a total of 319. At this rate it will take me about eight years to finish the list.

Best Films

This my top ten list, and it only includes films that I had not seen before 2009. In other words it doesn't include films which I saw in 2009 which I already loved (Body Heat, Man Bites Dog, etc.) but only films which were new to me.

  1. The Thin Red Line (1998)
  2. Red Rock West (1993)
  3. Out of the Past (1947)
  4. Shadows (1959)
  5. Touch of Evil (1958)
  6. Wings of Desire (1987)
  7. Hiroshima mon amour (1959)
  8. Soldier of Orange (1977)
  9. Unforgiven (1992)
  10. In the Name of the Father (1993)

Runners up (in order of release):

Worst Films

The following is a list of the worst films I saw in 2009. I try not to watch bad films so these aren't going to be the worst films ever made. A kinder name for the list might be "Most disappointing films" although a lot of them I did actually hate. The majority of these films are on the 1001 list which is why I watched them, but some had been independently recommended to me.

It might seem from this list that I hate Jean-Luc Godard, which I do (though I love Truffaut), that I hate Sergio Leone, which I mostly do, or that I hate Paul Newman, which I don't (I loved Hombre). The film I hated most on this list was The Red Desert, though I do like some of Antonioni's other films.
