Gang of Four

Last night I saw Gang of Four perform songs from their 1979 album, Entertainment! I love the album, but the show was even better than I was expecting.

The show was extremely energetic, with Jon King's frenetic dancing at times reminiscent of Ian Curtis'. They opened with 'Return the Gift', and the crowd -- primarily male, but an interesting mix of young fans discovering postpunk and older guys who had obviously been there in the 70s -- yelling 'Please send me evenings and weekends!'

The band also did a few unorthbodox things on stage. Perhaps I don't go to wild enough concerts, but I was surprised when Andy Gill threw his guitar at King to produce distortion, and even more so when they kept it up, repeatedly throwing the guitar onto the stage. One song also featured a microwave which King played rhythmically as a percussion instrument with a bat until it fell apart.

The most ecstatic moment was during 'Damaged Goods', when the crowd pressed against the stage screaming 'Sometimes I'm thinking that I love you / but I know it's only lust', and continuing to chant long after the song had ended.

A great show. I'd be surprised if the sound-alike Bloc Party could put on anything as invigorating. I only wish they had played 'Guns before Butter'.
