Denon DL-160
So today, after nineteen long days of waiting, my Denon DL-160 arrived. I spent about two hours installing it, I'm now enjoying the high output of its moving coil.
Embarrassingly, the closest record resulted in my initial test being Culture Club's 'Black Money'. My heart sank. It sounded bright, harsh, and thin. I put on Depeche Mode's Violator and was further disappointed to hear it sound vacant on the bottom end, without the foreboding boom that I was used to. Likewise with Elvis Costello's 'Beyond Belief'.
Since I had heard that it deals well with damaged vinyl, I figured I'd give my most damaged record a try -- a 12", oddly 33 1/3 version of Stacey Q's 'Two of Hearts'. Although it's in really terrible condition, it actually sounded all right, much less noise than from my previous Audio Technica AT-95.
I'm very skeptical of all the hifi snake oil, but I'm wondering whether this whole 'breaking in' thing actually might be true. I'll reluctantly admit that my amplifier (an Audiolab 8000a) sounds better when warm. Anyway, the point is that I'm now thoroughly enjoying Kate Bush's Whole Story.
I'll update this article depending on how I feel in a few days...
