1979
By way of explanation of the 1979 tag, my pet theory of the moment is that 1979 was the best year in all of music history. Don't get me wrong -- I love music from gregorian chants to stuff from 2007. I'm just saying that I think humanity may have passed its peak, and its peak was in 1979.
Not that nearby years didn't have their share of splash (Darkness on the Edge of Town, The Cars and Easter before, or The Pretenders, Heartattack and Vine after, just to name artists that didn't make this list). Nor do I think the following list of albums reflects the best work of all of these bands (although sometimes it does). It's more just the sheer volume of awesome bands. Alphabetically, without any other ordering principle in mind:
- Adam and the Ants - Dirk Wears White Sox
- The B-52s - The B-52s
- The Clash - London Calling
- Elvis Costello - Armed Forces
- Gang of Four - Entertainment
- Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
- Madness - One Step Beyond
- Pink Floyd - The Wall
- The Police - Reggatta de Blanc
- Public Image Ltd - Metal Box
- The Specials - The Specials
- Talking Heads - Fear of Music
Maybe I'm just going through a phase, I kind of love all those albums though.
Here are more I can't actually vouch for but intend to try soon (i.e., I like the artists but don't know the albums):
- David Bowie - Lodger
- The Buzzcocks - A Different Kind of Tension
- Bob Dylan - Slow Train Coming
- The Ramones - It's Alive
