The Kinks

Something Else by the Kinks (1967)

'She was so jealous of her sister...'

There's a really interesting article on this album, arguing that the Kinks have an American rock sound but forego the incomprehensible literary pretensions for down-to-earth British topics.

I think they were certainly influenced by Dylan albums from a few years before. 'Situation Vacant' seems a pretty clear reference to the beginning of 'Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine' from Blonde on Blonde, something about 'Death of a Clown'--is it only the fortune teller and the fortune-telling lady?--reminds me of 'Desolation Row' from Highway 61 Revisited.

The tune of 'Harry Rag' is like a slower 'Drill Ye Terriers Drill'...

You're on a yacht near an island in Greece
Though you are hot forget me not
I will keep waiting until your return
