Watching people speak
An exhausting weekend. I realize that unlike the Romantics, I feel the most inspiration while surrounded by people -- not just randos walking by, or even friends, but acquaintances speaking, arguing, declaiming. It's a constant flow of input, and even if the speech is uncompelling, the reasons why it's uncompelling are interesting. Even bad delivery is incredibly nuanced, a hugely complex interaction, once you get over the idea of comfort/discomfort. I think I just find public speaking about academic topics incredibly interesting. This weekend was perfect for what I mean, three 20 minute speakers, followed by a 45 minute discussion. I should go to more conferences. Fascinating as anthropology, provocative for my own thoughts, continual inspiration.
